2010 Emmy Nominations

Photobucket

This is what I love about the Awards world. Instead of putting all the major ceremonies over one 3-month period a year, they space them out so we get movies in the late winter, theatre in the summer, and television in the fall. The Tonys have come and gone (I didn’t cover them simply because I’m rather uninformed) but today we were given the nominations for the 2010 Primetime Emmys. And let me say, they did not disappoint. They did not disappoint at all. So let’s dive right in here.

Outstanding Comedy Series

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie
The Office
30 Rock

I think we can say right off the bat that Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Office are out. Frankly I don’t know why The Office is still getting nominated, it hasn’t been funny since season 3. But it’s fine. As open-minded as I’d like to be, there are really only two scenarios for this category that I will accept: 30 Rock winning for a fourth year in a row, or Modern Family ending their streak. If Glee wins…I don’t know. It will give that show (which let’s face it, is not what it set out to be) more credibility than I think it deserves. But sadly it is all too likely this will happen.

Outstanding Drama Series

Breaking Bad
Dexter
The Good Wife
Lost
Mad Men
True Blood

LOST! LOOOOSSTT! It won’t win, but it’s wonderful to see that the Academy (is it the Academy? I have no idea who the committee is for this) is willing to recognize that it went out with a bang. If it were being nominated for the whole series, it would definitely win, but unfortunately, season 6 was, quite simply…batsh*t crazy. Even though that finale was amazing. Mad Men will probably win again, but I could also see Breaking Bad or Dexter taking it.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Alec Baldwin for ’30 Rock’
Larry David for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’
Steve Carell for ‘The Office’
Matthew Morrison for ‘Glee’
Jim Parsons for ‘The Big Bang Theory’
Tony Shalhoub for ‘Monk’

I credit 99% of my distaste for Glee to the horrendous. HORRENDOUS. acting of Matthew Morrison. I have never encountered a character I want to punch in the face as much as Will Schuester. I loathe him more than anyone should a fictional person. But I don’t think he’ll win (thank the Lord). I’ve heard that it might be Jim Parsons’ year, which would be fine by me. I just will not allow it to be Matthew Morrison.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Kyle Chandler for ‘Friday Night Lights’
Bryan Cranston for ‘Breaking Bad’
Matthew Fox for ‘Lost’
Michael C. Hall for ‘Dexter’
Jon Hamm for ‘Mad Men’
Hugh Laurie for ‘House M.D.’

If this award was Outstanding Weepy Mess of a Man (Who is Also Beautiful), then no one would need to be nominated other than Matthew Fox. Unfortunately, it is not that award (it is in my own mind, though). That said, this is probably the best chance he’s ever had at winning this, so a girl can hope. I think it might be Michael C. Hall’s year, though, or Jon Hamm.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Toni Collette for ‘United States of Tara’
Edie Falco for ‘Nurse Jackie’
Tina Fey for ’30 Rock’
Julia Louis-Dreyfus for ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine’
Lea Michele for ‘Glee’
Amy Poehler for ‘Parks and Recreation’

SO happy to see Amy Poehler up there. Parks and Recreation is absolutely hilarious (and frankly should replace The Office in the best comedy category) and she is brilliant. I’m also pleased that Lea Michele got the nod, she really came into her own in the back 9 episodes (maybe the ONLY thing that actually improved). I think Toni Collette or Edie Falco is going to take it.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Connie Britton for ‘Friday Night Lights’
Glenn Close for ‘Damages’
Mariska Hargitay for ‘Law & Order: SVU’
January Jones for ‘Mad Men’
Julianna Margulies for ‘The Good Wife’
Kyra Sedgwick for ‘The Closer’

This category is a perfect example of why most Awards submission guidelines are ridiculous. For the last few years, the Mad Men team has submitted Elisabeth Moss as lead actress and January Jones as supporting, leading Moss to only be nominated once and Jones not at all (which, I might add, is a travesty). This year they decided to inverse this, and look! It worked! That said, I feel like it’s almost guaranteed to be Julianna Margulies. Still, it’s nice to see justice being done.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Ty Burrell for ‘Modern Family’
Chris Colfer for ‘Glee’
Jon Cryer for ‘Two and a Half Men’
Jesse Tyler Ferguson for ‘Modern Family’
Neil Patrick Harris for ‘How I Met Your Mother’
Eric Stonestreet for ‘Modern Family’

THREE, count ‘em, THREE actors from Modern Family. I am beside myself with delight at this. I think without a doubt it’s going to be either Ty Burrell or Eric Stonestreet, MAYBE Neil Patrick Harris, but it’s most likely going to be Burrell. Phil Dumphey is a legend. But I would so love to see Stonestreet win, simply for his weeping Billy Elliot impression “I just want to dance at the ballet!” or “Meryl Streep could be cast as Batman and still be the perfect choice.”

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Andre Braugher for ‘Men of a Certain Age’
Michael Emerson for ‘Lost’
Terry O’Quinn for ‘Lost’
Aaron Paul for ‘Breaking Bad’
Martin Short for ‘Damages’
John Slattery for ‘Mad Men’

I am making my prediction right now that Terry O’Quinn is going to have this award handed to him on a silver platter. I’m pretty sure everyone is looking at these Lost nominations as more cumulative than specific to season 6, and no one, NO ONE, deserves to be recognized from that show more than Terry O’Quinn. It will be an absolute travesty if he loses, even if it is to Michael Emerson (which it won’t be).

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Julie Bowen for ‘Modern Family’
Jane Krakowski for ’30 Rock’
Jane Lynch for ‘Glee’
Holland Taylor for ‘Two and a Half Man’
Sofia Vergara for ‘Modern Family’
Kristen Wiig for ‘Saturday Night Live’

This is a champion category. I am so so so happy to see that pretty much every actor from Modern Family (except Ed O’Neill?) is nominated for something. I would love to see Julie Bowen take it, she is probably the most realistic mom I’ve ever seen on TV. However, it’s all about Jane Lynch. And rightly so.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Christine Baranski for ‘The Good Wife’
Rose Byrne for ‘Damages’
Sharon Gless for ‘Burn Notice’
Christina Hendricks for ‘Mad Men’
Elisabeth Moss for ‘Mad Men’
Archie Panjabi for ‘The Good Wife’

I am so happy to see that all the Mad Men actors who have been repeatedly snubbed are having their moments this year. Never before have all three Mad Women been nominated, so this is kind of a big deal. Plus, now that they’ve moved Elisabeth Moss out of the lead category, it is entirely possible that she’ll win.

I think my only real complaint is that Nestor Carbonell wasn’t nominated. His work in ‘Ab Aeterno’ is arguably the best acting ‘Lost’ has ever seen. Not to mention, that is easily one of the best episodes of the entire series. But for real, that is the only serious snub I can find here. I am extremely happy with all of these nominees. Now if only the Motion Picture Academy had as much sense as their Television brethren.

  1. Thanks for the rundown! I hadn't seen the list. We are renting Madmen (1 or 2 words--can't remember) so I'll let you know what I think. On a side note, do you watch "How I Met Your Mother"? I think it's one of the funniest shows on TV.
